New Writers

JanaiBlog is happy to announce that we have three new writers on our team! Please welcome…

  • Jimmy Blocksom (DJTyrant)
Jimmy is a freelance blogger and recent college graduate (Information Technology and Game Design) who has written about anime, manga, and gaming for over seven years. He has a long history within the gaming industry working within retail, but also covering E3. His love of anime started in 2002 when he was introduced to Love Hina and (oddly enough) Golden Boy, the following year he attended Anime Expo and the rest is history. Outside of writing he enjoys podcasting and had a video game talk show for a year, and has appeared on numerous anime and video game related podcasts. Outside of gaming and anime, Jimmy loves designing and coding websites.
  • Jiyoon Kim (Aldotsk)
Jiyoon Kim is an artist, gamer, and a college student. He is currently majoring in biology, but that doesn’t stop him from reviewing video games, anime, manga and live-action dramas. Jiyoon reviews whatever he has watched and played.
  • Eric Robinson (theaustincritic)
Eric Robinson is an aspiring writer who currently runs the blog The Austin Critic, a site dedicated to anime and manga reviews. Here on JanaiBlog, Eric focuses mostly on writing anime and manga reviews. He is also the Editor in Chief of Manga Jouhou.

We’re glad to have them on the team and look forward to their posts. For more information, please check out The Team page and don’t forget to follow them on Twitter!

Manga Review: Fairy Tail (Volumes 1-2)

With all of the craziness that some of the more extreme anime and manga storylines can bring, sometimes it’s nice to settle into a good old fashioned epic adventure. If you’re looking for something to satisfy that craving, then Fairy Tail is a must for you!

The story starts with a girl named Lucy, a celestial wizard who has the power to summon powerful beasts using her collection of keys. Her biggest dream is to join a magic guild and go on exciting adventures (while earning a pretty penny in the process), and she has her eyes specifically set on Fairy Tail, one of the most powerful and rowdy guilds around. While traveling she runs into Natsu, a fire wizard, and Happy, his animal companion. After they go through a brief adventure together, he reveals that he is a member of Fairy Tail and takes her to their headquarters where she joins and starts on her journey as a guild wizard.

The first thing that I (and many others) thought when I saw Fairy Tail is that the art and feel of the story is very reminiscent of One Piece. It quickly sets itself apart though with a quirky and action-packed storyline filled with plenty of comedy and lovable characters. Lucy is a genuine, believable heroine, and the antics of Natsu, Happy, and the rest of the Fairy Tail crew are nothing short of unforgettable.

Crunchyroll’s Premium Subscription: Why You Should

As I’ve talked about before, there are plenty of options out there for those who wish to watch anime legally without spending a dime. Crunchyroll is one of those options. With a wide variety of anime series to choose from, viewers will most definitely find something interesting to watch there. The site is constantly updated with the newest, latest, and greatest hit shows from Japan. For those who aren’t into the big hits, Crunchyroll also caters to niche audiences with shows that don’t exactly sell like hotcakes, but still make enough to get by.

While the free option is nice, in order to fully appreciate the Crunchyroll experience, a premium membership option is available for those willing to spend $6.95 per month. Personally, I feel the subscription offers an array of benefits that make it more than worthwhile.

For most people, the most attractive benefit of the premium subscription is the ability to watch shows within an hour of when they air in Japan. That latest episode of Bleach is just a few clicks away, available to you the day it airs on TV. In addition to Bleach, Crunchyroll has also acquired other hit shounen action titles like Naruto: Shippuden, Fairy Tail, and Durarara!! If those kinds of shows aren’t your thing, then sit back and enjoy other hits like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Saki, or Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou.

“Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure” Ranks High On the Cheese-O-Meter, But I Still Love It

I saw it at a convention on sale for $30. It looked kinda cute, and since I’m not very good at resisting the urge to buy JRPGs, I went ahead and bought it. It was Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, a game that stays true to its name. There is indeed lots of music, and it’s also very cheesy. And that’s why I love it.

Rhapsody was originally released for the Sony PlayStation in 2000 (in the US). While the game (and its entire series) has seen much success in Japan, the game hasn’t done so well overseas. This is mostly due to the large number of cutscenes, weak gameplay, and its perception as a “girl’s game.” Despite this, the Nintendo DS remake of the game managed to make its way overseas in 2008. There are notable differences between the two versions, of which I’ll go into more detail later on. Primarily, this review will focus on the PS1 version of the game, which is the version I played.
