Anime Review: Corpse Princess (Shikabane Hime) – Part One: Aka

From looking at the cover of Corpse Princess, you can easily tell one thing: this anime is about badass girl who is seriously pissed off. At further look, you’ll also notice that it’s produced by Gainax, and thus can infer that it likely contains crazy over-the-top action and a unique art style. Blend these into a fairly decent fantasy story and you’ve got Corpse Princess. The first season of the Corpse Princess series delivers a good plot with plenty of action, and despite its negative qualities, it’s an enjoyable watch.

When her and her family were murdered, Makina Hoshimura became a Shikabane-Hime – a being whose purpose is to seek out and destroy Shikabane. A Shikabane is the risen corpse of a person who died with great regret in their mind. They are monsters with an uncontrollable hatred of all things living. They wreak havoc in humans’daily lives and are responsible for many strange and horrifying rumors. Shikabane-Hime, such as Makina, are tasked with killing 108 Shikabane. If they fulfill this contract, they are granted passage into heaven. Makina, however, has a different incentive – she seeks revenge on those that murdered her family.

More Band of the Hawks is All Right With Me

In case you thought it was all some crazy dream, we have definitive proof that the new Berserk anime project is a thing that actually exists in the form of a 15 second TV ad. Still no real details about it though. Astute observers will note that the scene shown above takes place during the Golden Age arc, which was covered by the previous anime series.

Hit the jump to see the TV ad, and some nicer quality screencaps of said TV ad.

More HTT is All Right With Me

Did you hear?

They’re making a K-ON! movie.

Sure, they’re milking the series for all it’s worth. And sure, the Type-A otaku are screaming “WHYYYYY?”

But who cares? They’re making a K-ON! movie.

No details have been announced yet, so we don’t know what kind of direction the movie will take. All I can say is I hope it has lots of music. And I hope they don’t call it K-ON!!!

Hit the jump for the TV spot.

MangaGamer to Distribute minori Visual Novels in English

MangaGamer, the company known for distributing Japanese visual novels in English, has announced a partnership with minori, creator of the ef series as well as various other visual novel games. In an interesting turn of events, minori has enlisted the help of fan-translation group No Name Losers, a group that they had previously sent a cease-and-desist notice to. Since then, NNL and minori have been in negotiations with each other in an effort to make NNL’s translation official. Looks like things finally worked out!

Since this is now to be an official product, several changes will be made to NNL’s translation. While the “to comply with Western laws” statement is sure to raise some eyebrows, details have yet to be released as to what specifically is being changed.

Personally, I applaud this move. It’s nice to see minori putting the fansub team to use rather than threatening them. Sending threatening letters would only hurt the company’s image, and legal action isn’t always the best route to take. This is a great way for minori to make their games accessible to the English-speaking community, which in the longrun will (hopefully) result in more sales. If you’re a fan of the ef series, be sure to pick up this title when it is released, and support this partnership!

It’s Like I Can See the Future or Something

Berserk Volume 35 Cover

Remember in my Romeo X Juliet Part 1 review when I mentioned I want more Berserk or things like it? Your reaction to that was probably something along the lines of “Pfft, like that’s going to happen. Moe is the future, and violent murder-porn is so 90′s.” Well, suck it, because violent murder-porn is making a comeback. Details are slim at the moment, as in there are none at all. The new anime project was announced on a wrap-around jacket for the 35th volume of the manga series, and more information will be included in the Young Animal magazine, which Berserk is serialized in. No idea if it’s a new TV series or a movie, or whether it will be a continuation of the previous series or a reboot. None of that matters though, because there’s a new Berserk anime of some sort on the way and I am happy.
