Ask Janai – Volume 1 – Meta Moment
Posted by Janai
So, I’ve decided to finally jump on the Formspring bandwagon. And with that, I’ll start a new column on this blog called “Ask Janai” where I’ll occasionally post my favorite questions and answers. If you have a question for me, send it in! If I like your question, it could end up posted here someday.
This new column also gives me a chance to better express my opinions about anime and the industry as a whole, which isn’t something I do too often on this blog (but do quite often on Twitter).
My first foray into the world of Formspring involved some questions about myself and my anime-related interests. Here’s what I answered…
I’ve added some additional notes in italics that aren’t part of my original answer.
| Who is your anime reviewing nemesis?
A nemesis? I’ve never thought of having one really. I like to think us reviewers are all in it together, not competing against each other. |
| Why the name Janai?
My name, Jon Ingoglia, is commonly shortened to “Jon I.” which is phonetically similar to “Janai,” the Japanese word for “is not.” There’s no real meaning to the name beyond that, though. |
| What is the best ecchi show that you have seen?
To Love-Ru, hands down. Sora no Otoshimono also ranks pretty highly. I should also add Strike Witches into the mix. I tend to not think of it as an “ecchi show” because it has a lot more to offer than fanservice, but technically, it is ecchi. |
| Anything you’re looking forward to for the fall anime season?
A lot of shows, actually. Bakuman I doubt I’ll keep up with all of them, but I will give them each at least a few episodes. Lots of people are saying the Fall season looks like it’s going to suck, but I beg to differ. Both To Love-Ru and Sora no Otoshimono are getting second seasons. We’re also finally getting some new mecha shows. Oreimo, for some reason, seems interesting, despite sounding terribly generic. The World God Only Knows is a hilarious manga, and I’m hoping the anime will be just as great. Finally, Yosuga no Sora looks like it could be the next Clannad, so I’m very much looking forward to it. |
| What do you like for the current anime season?
Currently I’m watching… Highschool of the Dead All of these shows are great to me, with the exception of HOTD, which has that “so bad it’s good” quality to it. Occult Academy has been a nice surprise this season, and I would love to see more shows like it. |
Check out my Formspring page for more questions and answers not mentioned here.
Naturally, I got a lot of questions on the subject of moe and “waifus.” Next “Ask Janai” post will feature those. Try not to be creeped out.

Pity Occult Academy has tanked during the last few episodes. It had such promise…
durr hurr formspring.
All I think about when I hear it is ‘spam’, so… :V
@Mushyrulez: Well, that’s why I’m posting them here, instead of on Twitter. I don’t want to flood people’s Twitter feeds. Plus, here I can add some additional notes.
