Last Exile DVD Complete Series (Anime Classics)

Plot Synopsis: “It’s the dawn of the Golden Age of Aviation on planet Prester, and retro-futuristic sky vehicles known as vanships dominate the horizon. Claus Valca, a flyboy born with the right stuff, and his fiery navigator, Lavie, are fearless racers obsessed with becoming the first sky couriers to cross the Grand Stream in a vanship.

When the high-flying duo encounters a mysterious girl named Alvis, they are thrust into the middle of an endless battle between Anatoray and Disith, two countries systematically destroying each other according to the code of chivalric warfare. Lives will be lost and legacies determined as Claus and Lavie attempt to bring peace to their world by solving the riddle of its chaotic core.”

I watch the first episode of Last Exile earlier in the year from the earlier release by Geneon and I really wanted to add this series to my collection since I am a fan of Gonzo’s wokrs (both good and what others think are not so good).  Well TRSI has the newest release on sale during the their 12 Days of Christmas so I just could not pass this up.

Last Exile DVD Complete Collection is available from Right Stuf

Sgt. Frog Season 3 Part 1 and Part 2

Plot Synopsis (from Part 1): “Keroro is Sergeant Frog, the leader of a platoon of warriors sent to conquer planet Earth. But when the amphibious invaders discovered how much humans enjoy dissecting their comrades, the troops were scattered, the mission was aborted, and Keroro was abandoned. Now, this once proud soldier spends more time wielding a vacuum than he does the weapons of war.

It’s a far cry from the glory of battle, but hey, at least he’s got his own room. And though the invasion may have slowed to a hop, Sergeant Frog still occasionally yearns to overcome his karaoke addiction and reassemble his troops. Watch out world, the frogs are taking over!”

I like Sgt. Frog.  I have all of the half sets from the first two “seasons” that Funimation released.  Needless to say I wanted to get the most recent sets that were released.  Like Last Exile Right Stuf had these sets on sale for a great price.

Sgt. Frog Part 1 and Part 2 is available from Right Stuf

Season 1 and Season 2 are also available from Right Stuf

Now and Then, Here and There DVD Complete Collection

Plot Synopsis: “Dragged through a time warp by a strange machine, Shu is thrust into a hellish future as it explodes into war! Surrounded by fierce warriors enslaved innocents, and enigmatic wanderers, Shu faces the ultimate challenge of survival in a world gone mad!”

I have heard about Now and Then, Here and There before but I have never watched any of it before in my life.  Well DeepDiscount has the series on sale for one hell of a deal that I could not pass up.

Now and Then, Here and There is available from Amazon.com

Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie + Eizou Hakusho DVD set

Plot Synopsis: “Yusuke Urameshi is not exactly what you’d call an angel. In fact, some might call him down right devilish. But when he dies in an accident trying to save a child, he finds himself in the Spirit World, too good for hell, but not good enough for heaven.

Now Yusuke works as a half dead, half alive agent for Koenma, son of the ruler of the Spirit World. This position does have its disadvantages, especially after Koenma gets kidnapped, and Yusuke must find Koenma to trade the Golden Seal of King Enma for his life.”

I love the Yu Yu Hakusho series.  I however have never watched the movie or the OVA’s for this series.  Well once Funimation decided to release the series I had a desire to have it in my collection.

Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie + Eizou Hakusho is available from Right Stuf

Vision of Escaflowne DVD Complete Collection Super Legends

Plot Synopsis: “Hitomi Kanzaki is a typical high school girl, with typical high school problems. But when a vision of a young man battling a dragon becomes a reality, her life changes forever.

Drawn into a strange vortex with the swordsman, Van, Hitomi is thrust into the strange world of Gaea. Entangled in a struggle over life and death, Van must learn to master the suit of armor, Escaflowne. Chased by the Empire of Zaibach, Van and Hitomi will encounter both allies and enemies in an effort to unlock the secrets within Escaflowne. Hitomi’s heart is stirred by love and adventure, but at times aches with sorrow.”

Now I have never watched Escaflowne before.  I have heard of it before a few different times and it seems to get a lot of praise from what I have read.  Well Buy.com had the series on sale for pretty cheap and I had some extra cash around so I decided to go ahead and order it.

Vision of Escaflowne DVD Complete Collection Super Legends is available from Right Stuf

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket Complete Collections Anime Legends

Plot Synopsis: “Universal Century 0079. When the Principality of Zeon learns of a new Gundam being built, the veteran spec-ops Cyclops Team is dispatched to the civilian colony of Libot to investigate. Their newest member, Bernie Wiseman, gets shot down in action and meets young Al, who dreams of mobile suits and space battles. Al thinks of Bernie as a friend, and even goes to great lengths to track him down while on his mission. He doesn’t realize the potential danger he’s in.

Meanwhile, Al’s nextdoor neighbor Christina returns home with a new “government job.” She’s really the test pilot of the top-secret Gundam Alex – the objective of Bernie’s mission! As the story unfolds, three lives will be changed forever by this one small part of the war.”

I LOVE the Gundam franchise.  To show my age here I had bought the singles (yes there was a time when anime was released on single DVD’s) way back in 2002 (I was a sophomore in High School at that time).  I felt that I should have the most recent release of the series in my collection

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is available from Right Stuf

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team Complete Collection Anime Legends

Plot Synopsis: “The year is Univeral Century 0079. The Federation has begun mass production of the prototype Gundams for use by their ground forces. Shiro Amada, commander of the 08th MS Team, must lead his squadron through fierce fighting on the ground. However, the Zeons are developing a secret project which could tip the balance of power! Can Shiro and his ragtag team of castoffs, rejects, and bad attitudes save the Federation?”

Again to show my age here I remember watching this series on Toonami (if you have not heard of it look it up) years ago.  I have the original DVD’s that Bandai released for the series and with 0080 above I felt I had to have the most recent release in my collection

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team is available from Right Stuf

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory DVD Complete Collection Anime Legends

Plot Synopsis: “Universal Century 0083. Having triumphed in the One-Year War, the Earth Federation has grown complacent, while the last remnants of Zeonic forces have been planning one final stand. It all hinges on ace Zeon pilot Anavel Gato stealing one of the new prototype Gundams out from under the Federation’s nose. With a nuclear-equipped Gundam missing and their pride wounded, the Federation ship Albion and rookie pilot Kou Uraki set out in pursuit of the Zeonic thieves and the stolen Gundam.”

I could state something here but I am just going to say read the reason I purchased this from the last two items above.

Princess Tutu: Complete Collection

Plot Synopsis: “A girl named Duck – or rather, a duck who wants to become a girl – falls in love with a prince. One day, a bizarre old man emerges and gives her a magical pendant that transforms her into the waltzing Princess Tutu. Now she must choose – for those who accept their fate find happiness, those who defy it, glory.”

For the reason on getting this series read my post about Now and Then, Here and There above as it applies to Princess Tutu as well.

Sekirei: Pure Engagement DVD/BD Complete Series Limited Edition

Plot Synopsis: “A clandestine organization known as the MBI has issued an edict that threatens to end the lives of Minato and his luscious companions once and for all! The cutthroat organization’s Sekirei Plan will force all busty brawlers and their masters to engage in a flesh-baring fight to the finish. Only one amazing pair will be left standing when this curvaceous cavalcade of carnage has come to a conclusion. Does Minato have what it takes to survive the bombastic barrage of breast-jiggling blows coming his way?”

No lying here on this one, I love Sekirei.  Sure there is not much to the plot, but you do not watch Sekirei for the plot at all.  You watch it for T&A which is what I am all for.

Sekirei: Pure Engagement DVD/BD Complete Series Limited Edition is available from Right Stuf

The standard edition of the series is also available from Right Stuf

Heaven’s Lost Property Complete Set DVD/BD

Plot Synopsis: “Tomoki’s life was normal until a wish-granting angelic android named Ikaros fell from the sky and started calling him master! Of course, thanks to his raging teenage hormones, most of Tomoki’s wishes have something to do with panties. And that makes things pretty complicated, because one simple wish can lead to a rampaging robot made out of frilly undergarments or turn bloomers into bombs capable of blowing up entire neighborhoods!

If Tomoki doesn’t learn to control his impulses around Ikaros and be more careful with his wishes, the chaos will only get crazier. Luckily, even with such a dirty mind, Tomoki’s heart is in the right place. His hands, however, are a completely different story.”

I saw a bit of the first episode several weeks ago and since I am pretty much in love with ecchi I knew I that I just had to add this series to my collection.  Normally I go for the LE sets that Funimation sells since I like having a chipboard box, but I decided to be different and just get the regular version of the series instead of the LE set.

Heaven’s Lost Property Complete Set DVD/BD is available from RightStuf

The LE set is also available from RightStuf

KimiKiss Pure Rouge DVD Collection 1 and 2

Plot Synopsis (from Collection 1): “Kouichi always thought of Mao as his little sister, but when he wakes up from a dream and she walks into his house, he doesn’t even recognize her. It’s probably because after living in France for several years, Mao is definitely not anyone’s little sister anymore!

To further complicate things, Koichi’s mom has invited Mao to stay at their house while she attends the same high school as Kouichi and their mutual friend Kazuki. But given that Kouichi’s been trying to build a relationship with Yuumi, the revelation that he’s now sharing accommodations with a non-related girl is definitely going to cause some emotional waves – or maybe a tsunami by the time Kazuki’s sister Nana, her best friend Narumi, and all the other kids at school get overly involved.”

I have heard a few things about this series so after watching the first episode last month I decided to go ahead and grab the sets.  Right Stuf had them as a bundle so I was able to get both sets together for less than the MSRP of each set.

KimiKuss Pure Rouge Bundle is available from Right Stuf

Collection 1 and Collection 2 are also available from Right Stuf

Noir Complete Series DVD

Plot Synopsis: “Mireille makes a living killing as an international assassin. Kirika is an amnesiac with uncanny speed and stealth. Under the codename Noir, these two young mistresses of semi-automatics and improvised weapons track and execute criminal syndicates across the globe as they hunt for clues to their connected pasts – but it is they who are actually being hunted.

Caught in the crosshairs of a centuries-old conspiracy, the deadly beauties of Noir aim to expose the secrets of the ancient society orchestrating their lives. Will Mireille and Kirika have a future after they learn the truth about their pasts?”

I watched the first episode of Noir back in October on the Funimation Channel that Comcast has.  Like the first episode enough that I decided I had to own this series.  As with KimiKiss Pure Rouge TRSI had the newest Funimation release of the series on sale.

Noir Complete Series is available from Right Stuf

Trigun: Badlands Rumble BD

Plot Synopsis: “In town surrounded by quicksand, an outlaw from Vash the Stampede’s past has resurfaced after twenty years. His name is Gasback – and he’s looking to cause a little trouble. It seems Gasback has a serious beef with the town’s mayor, who’s paying dozens of bounty hunters to protect his turf.

One of those hired guns is a beautiful woman with a vendetta against Gasback. Will she get a shot at revenge? Maybe, if she can get through Gasback’s bodyguard, Wolfwood. And what’s Vash got to do with this mess? Nothing much – except for the fact that he personally set off the entire chain of events two decades ago!”

I am a fan of the Trigun series.  I have never watched the movie but I felt that I should see it.  As with the titles listed above TRSI has it on sale with the twelve days of Christmas sale.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble BD is available from TRSI

Plot Synopsis: “As the final duel rapidly approaches, the Student Council’s will to continue is beginning to waver. The Council’s ambitions are reignited, however, when they hear a sound. At first, it’s faint, but soon it becomes clear: the promised revolution is within reach – and the duels must go on.

And what of Utena’s own ambition? To become a prince, the duels may be only one of the trials she has yet to face.”

Sister Princess DVD Complete Collection

Plot Synopsis “Wataru Minakami was at the top of his class in middle school and had a pretty comfy life in Tokyo. When he unexpectedly fails his only high school entrance exam because of a computer glitch, his life is suddenly thrown into utter chaos! Jeeves, Wataru’s trusted butler, sends him off to attend school at Stargazer’s Hill in a mysterious place called Promised Island. Upon his arrival, Wataru encounters many friendly, cute girls. This isn’t a problem – until he finds out they are all his sisters!

For most kids, adjusting to life at a new school in a different town is tough enough. But for Wataru Minakami, high school will be the easy part! “

This is a complete blind buy for me.  Until I saw the DVD sets I had never heard of this series before.  Well DeepDiscount had an anime sale back on Black Friday and since this was series was going to for way cheap I decided to go ahead and purchase it.

Sister Princess DVD Complete Collection is available from Right Stuf

Sailor Moon GN 2

Plot Synopsis: “Usagi Tsukino is a normal girl until she meets up with Luna, a talking cat, who tells her that she is Sailor Moon. As Sailor Moon, Usagi must fight evils and enforce justice, in the name of the Moon and the mysterious Moon Princess. She meets other girls destined to be Sailor Senshi (Sailor Scouts), and together, they fight the forces of evil!”

I just love Sailor Moon.  I remember watching the TV series back when it was on US TV in the mid 90’s.  I never did read the manga when Tokyopop released it so now that Kodansha Comics is releasing it having in my collection is important to me.

Using a magic pen to transform, Sailor V fights the evil agents of the Dark Agency as she strives to protect the earth.”

Pretty much like Sailor Moon listed above the reason I purchase the last volume of this manga is that I am a fan of the franchise and wanted to see the last volume of this series.

Bamboo Blade GN 11:

Plot Synopsis: “Up-and-coming TV personality Ryouko Toda is an ambitious young woman who’s willing to use any means necessary to claw her way to the top. For Ryouko, image is key, but it’s tough for this cutthroat celebrity to maintain her cool on-screen persona when she’s forced to appear alongside ditzy costar Erina Sawamiya on Burnish Academy, where silly, simple Erina manges to best Ryouko in every single sport! To defeat Erina in sports and in the ratings game, Ryouko must call upon her skills not as an actress, but as a master of the kendo ring!”

I enjoyed the TV series for Bamboo Blade.  I was a fan of the manga first then I watched the TV series.  I just have to keep my collection growing every week.

While forced to hide his secret, along comes a cute – but hungry – vampire girl named Moka. Beneath her cute and clumsy exterior, she too is not exactly as she seems…”

I read the first volume of the manga a few months ago and I decided that I had to see the anime version of the show.  Right Stuf had both seasons in a bundle set that included some nice extras like an art book and some lenticular cards.

Rosario + Vampire DVD bundle is available from Right Stuf

Melancholy has set in on a cold winter day, as all the girls face some troubles doing their own thing. But a sudden text message from Yui cheers them up and they are all able to rally together and rock in the New Year at their first live house performance!”

Deepdiscount had the last volume of the K-ON! BD on sale for cheaper than Amazon or Right Stuf so I figured that I should get the last K-On! BD for my collection.

Stuff I Bought This Week – May 27th

Baccano Limited Edition Blu-Ray

Plot Synopsis: “Hot off the “Roaring Twenties” and headfirst into the uncertain volatility of the “Dirty Thirties,” criminal syndicates stormed into power by bootlegging alcohol during the Prohibition Era – but the most notorious “liquor” of all time is about to set off a violent chain reaction within the mafia underworld!

Each story involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral further and further out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia-operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction are mashed together for a world straight out of the movies.”

I love Baccano. It’s pretty much one of the best series to come out in the last few years. So when Aniplex USA said they’d be releasing the BD set here, with allegedly limited quantities, I couldn’t really pass up a chance to buy the series a second time. Only thing I don’t like about this set is it doesn’t come in a nice chipboard box like the Japanese release did. Other than that it’s great though. It looks great, and includes Funimation’s amazing dub, so I’m content with it.

Purchase the Baccano BD set at RightStuf before they run out

Le Chevalier D’Eon Volumes 1 – 5 w/ Artbox

Plot Synopsis: “Paris, 1742. A coffin floats in the shimmering Seine. On the lid, a word written in blood: Psalms. Inside, the body of a beautiful woman: Lia de Beaumont. Now her brother, D’Eon, seeks the reason for her mysterious murder, and uncovers an evil that shadows both the palaces of kings and the dark alleys of Europe.

A power wielded by spell-casting poets, and manipulated by royalty. A force so powerful it brings Lia’s soul back from beyond to seize the only weapon she can possess to avenge her death: her own brother.”

I was browsing the bargain bin at RightStuf when I stumbled upon this. Each volume was $4, except for the volume with artbox which was $5. It was a blind buy which I only went after because it’s cheap, and I happen to like artboxes. RightStuf didn’t have the sixth volume, so I’ll have to hunt a copy of that down on eBay or something.

Purchase Le Chevalier D’Eon at RightStuf

One Piece Season Three – Second Voyage

Plot Synopsis: “The Straw Hats traveled to Skypiea in search of adventure, but they may have gotten more than they bargained for. It took less than a day for Luffy to earn the title of public enemy number one, and now his crew is subject to the harsh judgment of an angry god and the four lethal priests of Upper Yard!

Zoro, Nami, Chopper, and Robin are trapped aboard the Going Merry when it’s commandeered by a crustacean and marooned on a sacrificial alter. Luffy, Sanji, and Usopp are quick to mount a rescue mission, but they’ve got a problem of their own: a dancing dango of madman with an endless supply of agonizing ways to die! It’ll take more than a miracle for this crew to be reunited – especially all in one piece!”

I like One Piece, so I continue to purchase One Piece DVDs. I almost have everything Funimation has put out at this point. Then I have to wait for season four. I hope it gets announced soon.

Purchase One Piece Season Three Second Voyage at RightStuf

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

After watching some of the original Gundam series sometime last year, I became interested in the franchise. I’m mostly in the older stuff, because most of what I’ve seen of the newer stuff doesn’t really seem so great. I’ve watched the first season of Gundam 00, which had some good parts but was kinda mediocre overall. Haven’t bothered to check out the second season yet, though I’ve never heard a single person say a good thing about it so maybe that’s for the best. On the other hand, I watched 08th MS Team and thought it was pretty great, so I figured I’d focus on the older stuff instead.

Purchase Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket at RightStuf

Claymore – Anime Classics

Plot Synopsis: “A brutal scourge stalks the land. Yoma, monsters driven by a hunger satisfied by only one quarry: Humanity. The dark breed knows but a singular foe: Claymore. Human-Yoma hybrids of extraordinary strength and cunning, the Claymores roam from skirmish to skirmish delivering salvation by the edge of a blade.

Thus begins the twisting tale of Clare, one such sister of the sword driven by pain in both victory and defeat. A child silent and suffering hidden in her past, Clare’s march toward vengeance unfolds along a path marked by violence, solitude and scorn. In a land where even the predator is prey, the haunted hearts of hunter and hunted alike wear the scars of the age.”

I had been meaning to pick up Claymore for a while but kept putting it off. Since it was recently re-released in Funimation’s Anime Classics line I figured I might as well get it now. It’s got everything I love. It’s fantasy, there are demons, women with swords killing them, violence, bloodshed. I have no idea why I put off buying it for so long.

Purchase Claymore at RightStuf

Soul Eater The Meister Collection (Blu-Ray)

Plot Synopsis: “Maka is a Meister and Soul is her Weapon. As students at the Grim Reaper’s Death Weapon Meister Academy, their study habits couldn’t be more different. But in battle against the supernatural forces of evil, they’re a freakin’lethal team.

That’s when Soul transforms – literally – into a razor-sharp scythe, and every defeated wicked soul he sucks down makes him more deadly. That’s when Maka unleashes the merciless slayer within, wielding her partner and dropping monsters. Seriously. Monsters. Like the witches, werewolves, and zombies that lurk in the shadows and feed on the souls of the innocent.

Every freakish ghoul Maka and Soul take out strengthens their bond, and fighting alongside their fellow Meister/Weapon classmates, Maka and Soul are the world’s last line of defense against evil.”

Soul Eater is actually the first DVD I ever reviewed. Back in the distant past of February 2011, when Funimation released the first DVD set. Don’t remember why I decided to review it, but because of it I ended up getting into this whole anime blog thing. Despite the fact that I really liked what I saw of the series, I never watched past episode 13. I was going to watch and review the rest as it came out but never got around to it. Since it’s being released on BD now, I’m going to actually watch and review it.
