Aniplex USA to release Oreimo
At their Otakon panel earlier today, Aniplex USA announced plans to release the anime series Oreimo on DVD. They will release it in a complete series set on October 18th, and it will include the OVA episode as well. The set will come with postcards, and a booklet featuring production info and character designs. The series will also begin streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll starting on August 31st. When asked during Q&A, Aniplex revealed that Oreimo will be a subtitle only release.
Other news came out of the panel as well. Star Driver, a series that Bandai licensed earlier this year, will begin streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll beginning on August 17th. There was no news about Madoka during the panel announcements, but during Q&A Aniplex revealed that the series will be dubbed when they eventually release it. During Q&A Aniplex also mentioned they were looking into a possible DVD release for Garden of Sinners, which was released on Blu-Ray earlier this year for $400. They also said they were looking into the upcoming Rurouni Kenshin series, as well as the movie Welcome to the Space Show.
The ConBlog: New York Anime Festival 2010
In September 2009, Reed Exhibitions, the company that brings us New York Comic Con (NYCC) and New York Anime Festival (NYAF), announced that in 2010 they would be combining both conventions into one super-huge mega-con. This news was met with mixed reactions. Some were delighted to hear that they would be able to get into both cons with only one admission – two cons for the price of one. Others were fearful that this was basically an excuse to “eliminate” NYAF, and that Reed would end up focusing mostly on the NYCC portion, while NYAF got “shoved into the basement.” Unfortunately, our worst fears came true, and as a result this year’s NYAF was far less enjoyable and far more frustrating.
But before getting into all that, let’s talk about the panels that took place…
New York Anime Festival 2010 Announcement Roundup
This year’s New York Anime Festival marks the end of the convention season. With that, there were several exciting new announcements from the companies.
Aniplex announced the release dates for Durarara!! The series will be released in 3 parts. Part 1 will be released on 1/25/11, Part 2 is coming on 3/29/11, and Part 3 will street sometime in May 2011. Part 1 will include a clear slip case and 5 collectible postcards. Some new dub cast announcements were made: Mela Lee will take the role of Erika, Brian Beacock will be Walker, and Steve Blum will be Kyohei.
R.O.D. (Read Or Die) Blu-ray will be available on 1/18/11 and includes all 26 TV episodes and the 3 OVA episodes. The box set will mimic the R2 box art and feature a 48-page booklet… all for the insane price of $159.98. Yes, really.
The ConBlog: Otakon 2010
Every summer, close to 30,000 otaku gather in Baltimore’s inner harbor area to attend the largest anime convention on the US east coast: Otakon. This year’s “Convention of Otaku Generation” took place from July 30 to August 1. In what turned out to be one of my favorite Otakons thus far, this year’s exhibition sported some awesome panels and special events that made the weekend lots of fun. Without further ado, let’s get to the rundown of what I attended…
