Winter 2012 Anime First Impressions: Papa no Iu wo Kikinasai!

Plot Synopsis: “Yuuta Segawa, a college student, suddenly becomes the guardian of his three nieces in place of his sister and her husband. The eldest niece, Sora, is a 14 year old 10th grader with semi-long brownish hair decorated with a ribbon. The middle niece, Miu, is an elementary schoolgirl with blond pigtails. The youngest niece, Hina, is an angelic 3 year old attending daycare. This at-home romantic comedy illustrates the chaotic but heartwarming lives of these four characters in their tiny one-room apartment.”

First Thoughts: To say that the first episode of this series is generic is like saying water is wet.  Just about everything here is generic and forgettable.  The character designs are cute but forgettable, the music is generic, and the art itself is generic.  The CG is awful and is just so wrong for the series.

As much as it generic there is a certain charm to it that makes me want to keep watching more of it.  Were introduced to the cast and from what I can see, none of the cast members so far being unlikeable.  The voice acting is okay, but is nothing special at all.  There is a little bit of fanservice present in the first episode but nothing that is overly fanserivce.

The first episode of Papa no Ii Wo Kikinasai is generic as you can get, yet there is a certain something to it that makes me still want to watch more of it.  This is not going to be best of the season material but a cute fun show to watch.

Score 2/5

Winter 2012 Anime First Impression: Moretsu Pirates (aka Bodacious Space Pirates)

Plot Synopsis: “Marika Katou is a freshman in high school who lives on the planet “Umi no Akehoshi” somewhere in space. One day, she is told that her father, who she thought was dead, was actually alive until just a while ago, and was the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. And she also finds out that they need her, his heir, to be captain so that they can keep flying! Marika begins a new life as a high school girl, and as captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru!”

Thoughts:  Ever be surprised by a show that has an idea that it should be tongue in cheek but it turns out not to be that way.  Welcome to the first episode of Bodacious Space Pirates.  The first episode gives the viewer’s enough to understand the world that this series is in, without being bogged down with info dumping or long periods of exposition.  The main girl is on the naïve side but she is still a likeable person.  We meet a few of the crew of the Bentenmaru and neither of them are dislikable people.  It is never really explained why the helmsman of the ship is now a substitute teacher at Marika’s school though from what we can tell I would say that he is there to recruiter for the ship.

The show is good looking both with the art in general and the character designs.  CG is used during the show and it great looking.  The music is really good as well.

The real question with Bodacious Space Pirates is this the best show of the season?  I have no idea just yet being with this just being the first episode, but it has all the potential to be the best show of the season.  If things keeping going like they do this could easily be one of the top shows of 2012.

Winter 2012 First Impression: Recorder to Randoseru

Plot Synopsis: “On the surface it seems as if Atsushi is an adult, but really he’s just an elementary student! However, he is paired with a second-year high school student Atsumi, whose height is just the opposite of his. These two together create an unusual relationship and will undoubtedly instigate some comedic antics in this slice of life comedy!”

Thoughts :So let me start this off by asking this question.  What you can say about a three minute long (okay 2:30 if you take out the ending) show?  There is not much at all that can be said here about the first episode of Recorder to Randoseru.  We are introduced to the main characters Atsumi and Atsushi.  With the male lead looking like an adult we a get a joke that is pretty predictable on how it turns out.

It is not a terrible looking series, but it is not going to set the world on fire animation wise.  The character design are okay but like the animation is not going to be neither ground breaking nor be impressive.

Recorder to Randoseru is in short a time killer.  It is going to be best to watch in between shows or if you need something to do.  Those looking for ground breaking shows should look else where.

Sentai Filmworks licenses Mashiroiro Symphony

Sentai Filmworks announced today that they have licensed the anime series Mashiroiro Symphony, which is currently airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll. Given that Crunchyroll listed Sentai as the publisher when they added the series to the site, this announcement was to be expected.

When boys suddenly get into places where they’ve never been allowed before, some girls tend to get upset.  So when the decision is made to merge the elite Yuihime Girls’ Private Academy and the coeducational Kagamidai Private Academy, everyone wants to take extra care in avoiding trouble while bringing the two Privates together.  Therefore, rather than just sticking the Kagamida boys into the Yuihime girls all at once, a plan is concocted in which a group of test males will be inserted into the Girls’ Private Academy first.  Thus it is that poor young Shingo finds himself being thrown as a sacrificial lamb to the lionesses of Yuihime, who aren’t exactly waiting for him with open arms.  Will Shingo manage to survive the estrogen soaked death pit that is Yuihime?  Can the girls learn to be more receptive to the boys?  And just how long until something involving panties will cause emotions to flare, sparks to fly and the battle of the sexes to explode?  It’s a desperate battle to turn discord into making sweet music together in MASHIROIRO SYMPHONY ~ The Color of Lovers!

The series is currently being simulcast on Crunchyroll, and Sentai Filmworks will release it subtitled on DVD next year.
