What OtakuAnthony bought this week July 15th
Hunter x Hunter DVD Set 1
Plot Synopsis: “Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasure, magical beasts, and even humans. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam.
Gon might be a country boy, but he has high aspirations. Despite his aunt’s protest, Gon decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a legendary Hunter. The journey begins on the long, arduous road to the Exam Hall, where he meets Leorio and Kurapika, two applicants with the same determination. Gon and his two companions must now prove their worth and earn the right to call themselves Hunters!”
While I may be 26 years old, I still enjoy Shonen shows every now and then. This show has been on my radar for a while to purchase, but I needed a good time to get it and now was the right time since I was able to get it for a good price.

Maid Sama DVD Collection 2:
Plot Synopsis: “If Misaki Ayuzawa didn’t already have enough problems being the first female student council president of the formerly all-male Seika High School and carrying on a secret double life as a waitress at a local maid cafe by night, the fact that she may be starting to have feelings for Usui, the first boy to discover her dual life, has pushed her nerves to the breaking point. But fate certainly won’t leave it at that, and now she has to deal with a new guy who is not only extremely anti-girl, but a hypnotist as well!
Toss in an organized crime cartel that wants to replace the maid cafe with a butler bistro, some very annoying new transfer students, and the inevitable trip to the hot springs and everyone is guaranteed to end up in hot water one way or another!”
I did not expect this to ship a few weeks early. Have not watched collection 1 of this series, so I think I will give it a watch once I decided to sit and watch collection 1.

Eden of the East Complete Series BD:
Plot Synopsis: “Akira Takizawa wakes up naked outside the White House with no memories. He’s got a gun in one hand and a cell phone in the other, and he doesn’t know if he’s a good guy or one of the worst. He doesn’t remember that the phone gives him instant access to ten billion yen and a woman who can make his most outlandish requests a reality. He doesn’t recall his connection to the ongoing missile attacks terrorizing the Japanese people, or the part he played in the sudden disappearance of 20,000 shut-ins. He doesn’t even remember he’s supposed to save Japan and will be murdered if he fails. Whatever it is he’s tangled up in, Takizawa’s definitely in deep – and that’s not even scratching the surface.”
Rented Eden of the East a few weeks ago and decided to add it to my collection.

Bamboo Blade: The Complete Series:
Plot Synopsis: “It didn’t take long for pint-sized Tamaki’s lightning reflexes to catch the eye of starving Kendo instructor Toraji. This second-rate sensei is an embarrassment to the sport, and his Kendo club is running out of members. His only hope for redemption – and a full belly – is to get Tamaki to sign-on as his star pupil. Unfortunately, this sword-wielding prodigy is a serious anime addict, so it’ll be a challenge to get her to step away from the television and into the dojo. But once she feels like a part of the team, Tamaki will put down the remote and pick up her sword as Toraji turns his girls into a fearsome sisterhood of the bamboo blade!
I got a chance to watch this series last year via Funimation on Demand via the cable provider Comcast. I am a fan of both the manga and the anime of the series. Thankfully Amazon has a Funimation sale right now that allowed me to get this series for a much cheaper than expected price.

I rented this game on my birthday 2 months ago and wanted to buy it for my increasing PS3 collection so I decided to get
Stuff I Bought This Week – May 13th
Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box 5
Plot Synopsis: I don’t think they put a plot synopsis on the back of these. Pretty sure there’s just a piece of paper stuck to the back explaining that this is the most definitely best definitive ultimate form of Dragon Ball Z. I can’t remember what actually happens in these episodes, but I can only assume that Goku powers up and punches some dudes.
I’ve bought all of the Dragon Boxes so far, but haven’t bothered watching any of them. Each one has about 40 episodes in it, and I just never quite feel like sitting down and watching them. The only reason I even buy them is because I like Dragon Ball Z, and I like the nice chipboard box these come in. Still, one of these days I’ll sit down and actually watch these.

One Piece Season 3 Fifth Voyage
Plot Synopsis: “When their descent from the sky doesn’t go as planned, the Straw Hats find themselves trapped in the Marine stronghold of Navarone. This impenetrable island is surrounded by scraggy stone walls and governed by a military mastermind known as Commander Jonathan. Pirates imprisoned within Navarone’s walls seldom live to see the other side, but not even the great Commander Jonathan has ever faced foes as formidable as Luffy and his crew. Eager to escape the island and get back in the water, the Straw Hats hatch a plan to spring Zoro from the clink, reclaim their confiscated gold, and rendezvous at the Going Merry for a life-or-death, do-or-die, daring dash into the freedom of the deep blue sea! The sailing certainly won’t be smooth, and it’ll take all hands on deck to survive this scrape!”
I bought this before the rest of season 3 because it was $29.99, and I figured that price wouldn’t last long. Now with the current RightStuf sale they’re all $29.99 so I guess I was wrong about that one. You should buy them. Seriously.

Eden of the East: The King of Eden (DVD/Blu-Ray Combo)
Plot Synopsis:”The intrigue goes international in The King of Eden, a feature-length conspiracy thriller that continues the action of Eden of the East. The deadly game that began in Japan now intensifies on the streets of New York City. The rules are the same: do whatever it takes to win. Die if you lose. Takizawa prevented Japan’s destruction – and then he vanished. Six months later, clues lead Saki to the Big Apple in search of her missing friend. Meanwhile, the remaining Selecao are plotting their final move. Some of them would prefer Takizawa dead and out of the way. Some might even be willing to help him achieve his goals. Unfortunately, some are prepared to destroy everything if it means claiming checkmate in Mr. Outside’s puzzling game.”
I watched Eden of the East a few months ago, and really liked it, so it’s kind of obvious I’d buy the movie too. Although I’ve heard from absolutely everyone that the movie isn’t very good and doesn’t answer anything that was left open in the series. So that sounds great. It also comes in a DVD size case so it doesn’t match my BD of the TV series. I plan to whine about this all week on Twitter.

Kiddy Grade – Anime Classics
Plot Synopsis: “In Star Century Zero-One-Sixty-Five, the Global Union was born. To provide an impartial mediator to the various planetary governments of the G.U., the Galactic Organization of Trade and Tariffs, or G.O.T.T., was simultaneously formed to settle economic disputes amongst the member planets. Existing in the shadows of the G.O.T.T., the ES Force serves as the G.O.T.T.’s primary law enforcement organization. ES Force members Eclair and Lumiere are on the front line, pursuing all manner of criminals and bringing them to justice. This is their story.”
I don’t really remember why I bought this. Just looking at the cover should have been enough to make me turn away. There’s a little girl in a weird revealing outfit. There’s the Gonzo logo. Both great reasons to not buy something (coincidentally both of these things are also featured on the Strike Witches cover). Maybe it was really cheap. Maybe I was drunk. Who knows.

Slayers – The Motion Picture
Plot Synopsis: “Enveloped in mists, the island of Mipross has been shrouded in mystery since the dawn of time! Now, two mighty sorceresses will attempt to pierce the veil of secrecy and silence that has hidden the horrible truth about Mipross from the eyes of men for hundreds of year! Join the short-statured and even shorter tempered master mage Lina Inverse and her over endowed associate Nahga the Serpent as they untangle a Dreamweaver’s spell and find themselves ensnared in a deadly web of intrigue and danger! Phantom dragons, amphibious demons and the promise of aesthetic enhancement… year, the Slayers will be there!”
I got into Slayers recently, finally managing to slog through the 3 season box set that I bought well over a year ago, so I figured I’d go after the movies. ‘Cause there’s nothing like trying to hunt down old and hard to find DVDs. This thing is so old it has DVD ROM features. I bought it used on eBay for like $5. It came with candy, specifically the American version of Smarties. I decided not to eat them.
Fruits Basket Volumes 16 – 20
Plot Synopsis: “Tragedy continues to smother the Sohma family, and it seems to be spreading to those connected to the Sohmas as well. Kyo has met Tohru’s mother in the past, and his memory involves Tohru’s birth. Is she ready to hear the truth about her mother and father? Meanwhile, Yuki declares his independence from the actions of others. How will Akito handle Yuki’s declaration?”
Since Stu Levy decided that publishing manga was so 2010 and closed Tokyopop I figured I should finish getting Fruits Basket before it becomes hard to find. I don’t know if it ever will be hard to find, but I don’t really want to take any chances.
Sakura Con/Anime Boston News
Sakura Con and Anime Boston continued today. With the numerous industry panels taking place there were plenty of announcements to cover. Here they are, divided up by company:
Sentai Filmworks
At their Anime Boston panel earlier today, Sentai Filmworks announced that they had licensed Senko no Night Raid, which they referred to as Night Raid 1931. Night Raid was the second series in Aniplex’ and TV Tokyo’s joint project Anime no Chikara, which focused on creating original anime series, as opposed to adapting them from manga or light novels. It focuses on a group of Japanese spies dispatched to Shanghai in 1931 due to the First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. Sentai will be releasing it in a complete series set on DVD and Blu-Ray this August.
Sentai also premiered their dub of Angel Beats, which will be out on DVD and Blu-Ray in July. Unfortunately the host of the panel did not have a cast list with him, so the actual cast is currently unknown.
Funimation Entertainment
At their Anime Boston panel earlier today, Funimation announced that the final Eden of the East movie, Paradise Lost, would be released in August. Kenji Kamiyama, director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Moribito Guardian of the Spirit, directed both the TV series and the movies. The TV series originally aired during Fuji TV’s noitaminA block, and was released on Blu-Ray and DVD by Funimation last fall. The first movie, King of Eden, comes out next week in a DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack and includes Air Communication, a 90 minute recap of the TV series.
The also announced that they would simulcasting the series Aria the Scarlet Ammo starting this upcoming Tuesday at 10 AM Central. Aria the Scarlet Ammo is about a bunch of girls with guns at a high school who probably shoot stuff.
Those were the only new announcements made at the panel, with the rest being devoted to Q&A as well as going over releases for series that have already been announced such as Shin-Chan, Sgt. Frog, Excel Saga, Dance in the Vampire Bund, and the Soul Eater and Yu Yu Hakusho Blu-Ray releases.
Bandai Entertainment
Bandai held a panel at Sakura Con earlier today where they made several announcements.
The first couple of announcements are about Gundam properties. Bandai had mentioned last year that they intended to re-release the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, this time with the original Japanese audio that was lacking from its first release. Today they’ve announced that they plan to release the series on DVD this summer. There was another Gundam announcement at the panel, this one in regards to the Gundam 00 movie, A wakening of the Trailblazer. Bandai announced plans to release it on DVD and Blu-Ray this summer.
Bandai also announced plans to release The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, the latest entry in the Haruhi franchise. They aim to release it some time this summer on DVD and Blu-Ray. The movie adapts the fourth book of the Haruhi light novel series, in which Kyon arrives at school one day to find that Haruhi has vanished, and the other members of the SOS Brigade claim they don’t know him. Kyon seems to be the only person who remembers Haruhi and the SOS Brigade, and he seeks an answer as to what’s going on.
The last announcement Bandai made at their panel was the acquisition of Star Driver. This was to be expected since they had teased the announcement a few weeks ago. They have not announced a release date, format, or any other information whatsoever.
That’s all the information out of the conventions today. Aniplex USA held a panel at Sakura Con, but had nothing to announce.

2009 in Review: Top 10 Best Anime
It’s December, and a new year is almost upon us. 2009 was a great year for anime fans, with a great abundance of new shows coming out. With all these great new shows, it’s tough to pick out the really good ones. Thus, I present to you, my list of the ten best anime of 2009. Please note that the following list is only my opinion and should simply be seen as a list of shows I recommend you watch. I’m sure many people are going to hate what I picked, but hey, that’s why it’s my list, and not yours.

10. Umineko no Naku Koro niFollowing the great success of Ryukishi07‘s Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Umineko is a different story presented in a similar fashion, employing the use of “time resets” in telling the story. Instead of taking place in a town with crazy little girls, Umineko takes place on a remote island with greedy people who want gold. The island is supposedly haunted by a witch that threatens to kill everyone unless they find her treasure in time. Umineko, while a good series, is a bit of a disappointment. The first few episodes definitely drew me into the series, as Maria’s definitely one crazy awesome psycho. However, it didn’t take long for things to get way out of hand. The plot became very confusing and just didn’t make much sense at all. Despite all this, it’s still a damn enjoyable show to watch, even if you don’t know what the hell is going on. It’s nowhere near as good as Higurashi, but really now, what is? |

9. Hayate no Gotoku!!While not as good as the first season, the second season of the franchise was still an excellent and very fun show to watch. In the second season, there are significantly less parodies and the layout is much more non-episodic. Most of the characters from season 1 are back, and there are even some new additions to the cast. There is an actual story to follow this time, and much of it is spent on the romantic aspect of the show. Don’t let that fool you though, because it’s still a drop-dead hilarious show. Fans of the first season may be upset with the changes, but I think season 2 did a fine job at delivering more content to viewers while still remaining the comedy it always was. Hayate no Gotoku!! is currently available on Crunchyroll |

8. K-ON!KyoAni‘s long-anticipated anime adaptation of Kakifly’s immensely popular 4koma manga. K-ON! is definitely good for some light humor and runs exceptionally high on the moe scale. There isn’t much plot to the show, and it’s mostly a typical slice-of-life, but there’s music! Yui, Mio, Ritsu, Tsugumi (and later on, Azusa) form a “light music club” with their goals set high: they want to perform at Budokan. There are certainly pacing issues in the show. One complaint I have is that for a show that focuses on music, there just doesn’t seem to be enough of it. There certainly are an array of concert and practice scenes in the show, but by the end I was left wanting more. However, the cuteness/moe factor of the show is what kept me interested. The comedy is light-hearted and fun, and the animation is superb. Unless you’re one of those crazy people that thinks moe is the cancer killing anime, this show is definitely worth a look. |
|
7. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0A nerve-wraking, heart-warming, tear-jerking tale of what could happen if Tokyo were struck witth a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. It’s hard to believe that a show about an earthquake could run for 11 episodes and still manage to be a great show throughout all of it, but Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 pulls it off. While visiting a robot exposition with her brother, Mirai and her brother Yuki are caught in the midst of the earthquake. They survive, but now they must go through many trials and tribulations to find their way home to their parents, assuming they are still alive. This show will definitely tug at your heartstrings. It plays with your emotions in many ways, and that’s what makes it so great. The production value is high, and it certainly shows in the animation and visuals. It’s a wonderful show that even those who don’t like anime will not want to miss. |

6. NeedlessYes, you read that right. Needless. I realize I’m being very bold in saying this, but Needless is a damn good show. Yes, it’s stupid. Yes, it has a dumb story that’s overly-clichéd. Whatever. This show is non-stop over-the-top action comedy and that’s why it’s awesome. Needless follows the story of Adam Blade, Eve Neuschwanstein and their comrades as they struggle to prevent their rival Adam Arclight and his minions from taking over the world with their immense power. Take Gurren Lagann‘s art style and craziness, add more fanservice and a dash of moe, and you have Needless. Some people will rip this show apart to shreds, but I say that those people are just expecting too much. Needless is an action comedy, and that’s it. Don’t expect a deep story or even a story that makes sense, or else you’re just going to be banging your head on your desk after watching 5 minutes of the show. |

5. Eden of the EastEden of the East is an incredible sci-fi mystery about a man who is mysteriously thrown into a Battle Royale-style contest where he must fight to be the last man standing. Except that this time, the entire nation of Japan is at risk. Eden will immediately immerse you in its many mysteries after one episode, and will easily make you want more. Gradually, more and more mysteries are revealed as the plot unfolds. This is another show with excellent production value. Viewers will immediately be taken by the level of detail in the characters, backgrounds, and animation. The Eden TV series is followed by two movies (one of which is still in production) that conclude this epic story. Eden of the East is currently licensed and will be distributed by Funimation Entertainment |

4. Kurokami the AnimationAnother excellent yet overlooked series, Kurokami is an epic fantasy story with a Shakugan no Shana-like feel. In the world, there is a rumor that for every person, there are two people who look exactly like them, known as doppelliners. Should a person come into contact with one of their doppelliners, they risk immediate death. There are some who are looking to exploit this system and use it to their advantage. Kurokami is a visually stunning series. The action scenes are over-the-top awesome, and the animation quality is excellent. The story may not be an entirely original concept, but it still has a fresh feel to it. If you’re looking for a good action show with awesome characters and a great fantasy story, then Kurokami is definitely worth checking out. Kurokami the Animation is currently licensed by Bandai Entertainment and is available on Crunchyroll and YouTube |

3. CANAANCANAAN is another awesome girls-with-guns anime. The formula has worked in the past, and it certainly works here. CANAAN has impressive visuals during fight scenes, so if you’re craving some eye candy, there’s a good reason to watch this show. Even then, the show manages to have a great cast of characters and an exicting story. Some may knock this show for its typical shounen action-like feel. However, CANAAN is definitely a fun ride full of excitement and suspense that should not be overlooked. |

2. To Aru Kagaku no RailgunOriginally a manga side story to To Aru Majutsu no Index, Railgun certainly delivers where Index failed to. Although Index was a good show, there were many pacing issues with it that caused it to fall apart at times. Such is not the case with Railgun, where every episode is a chock full of laughs, great story, and amazing action. Every episode delivers outstanding production value and fresh comedy while managing to balance it all out. There are very few parts that could be considered “dragged out” or “boring” and that’s what makes this show worthy of the #2 spot in this list. |
|
1. Seitokai no IchizonYes, that’s right. Seitokai no Ichizon. Hate it, love it, or love to hate it, this is the absolute best anime series of 2009 in my opinion. Why is it so great? Seitokai parodies everything from Death Note to K-ON! in a very fresh style and presented by an incredible cast of “moeblob” characters. It’s like Lucky Star, but with a greater focus on recent anime, and that’s why I love this show so much. Seitokai not only parodies anime series, but it also pokes fun at the entire anime industry, adding even more humor that will have you rolling on the floor. Even aside from that, there are still tons of hysterical jokes that aren’t parodies. So even if you’re sick of parody anime, don’t be turned away, because there are tons of original jokes too. |
