Funimation February 2012 Releases

Funimation’s releases for February 2012 are now available for pre-order on RightStuf. I personally recommend Sengoku Basara. First season was awesome, and I have high hopes for the second. Also, this list is distinctly lacking in S.A.V.E. and Classics releases, so RightStuf may not be finished listing everything yet.

Funimation Sakura Con 2011 Announcements

Not much news came out of Funimation’s panel at Sakura Con today, but there are a few announcements.

The biggest announcement was the acquisition of the currently airing series Fairy Tail. Dubbing of the series has already begun, and they plan on releasing the first DVD set in the Fall. An announcement of this series was expected to come from one of the US distributors as Manga Entertainment, who is distributing the series in the UK, had mentioned that the series would be released here, but they couldn’t say who would be releasing it. The series premiered in the Fall of 2009 and is currently being simulcast on Crunchyroll, though older episodes aren’t available.

They also announced that they would be releasing season three of Shin-Chan, though this isn’t really a surprise since the DVD has been listed on Amazon and RightStuf for a while now.

They also mentioned that they will have more news at their Anime Boston panel tomorrow, including possibly a simulcast announcement. Luckily enough, Janai will be attending that panel so I’ll hear of any announcements as soon as they happen.

Manga Review: Fairy Tail (Volumes 1-2)

With all of the craziness that some of the more extreme anime and manga storylines can bring, sometimes it’s nice to settle into a good old fashioned epic adventure. If you’re looking for something to satisfy that craving, then Fairy Tail is a must for you!

The story starts with a girl named Lucy, a celestial wizard who has the power to summon powerful beasts using her collection of keys. Her biggest dream is to join a magic guild and go on exciting adventures (while earning a pretty penny in the process), and she has her eyes specifically set on Fairy Tail, one of the most powerful and rowdy guilds around. While traveling she runs into Natsu, a fire wizard, and Happy, his animal companion. After they go through a brief adventure together, he reveals that he is a member of Fairy Tail and takes her to their headquarters where she joins and starts on her journey as a guild wizard.

The first thing that I (and many others) thought when I saw Fairy Tail is that the art and feel of the story is very reminiscent of One Piece. It quickly sets itself apart though with a quirky and action-packed storyline filled with plenty of comedy and lovable characters. Lucy is a genuine, believable heroine, and the antics of Natsu, Happy, and the rest of the Fairy Tail crew are nothing short of unforgettable.

Otaku in Review Podcast – This is [not] 4kids

It was a slow anime news week this week, so Scott and I mostly talk about some random stuff in this episode. We do, however, get into the topic of speculating which show 4kids has recently licensed. Also, I discuss my experience with Summer Wars, which I was lucky enough to be able to see at NYICFF.
