Stuff I Bought This Week – June 3rd
Slayers Great
Plot Synopsis: “All Laia Einburg wants is for her golem-making father Galia and her equally ambitious brother Huey to end their long-running feud. But her world gets turned upside down when short-statured Lina Inverse and overly endowed Naga the Serpent save Laia from a rampaging golem.
A grateful and smitten Galia asks Lina to be a model for his work. Not to be outdone, his son Huey makes a similar request to Naga. The results are towering remote-controlled golems in the image of our favorite sorceresses! Huey gets all the proportions right, but Galia’s taste is just – weird.
Officially, Lords Haizen and Granion commissioned these golems for a contest to determine the ruler of the city of Stoner. But the lords have other plans for the larger than life prototypes. Can Lina save herself from Naga and save the city from tyranny? Don’t miss another exciting Slayers tale!”
Still collecting those Slayers movie. Almost got them all now. Almost.

Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 – Anime Classics (Blu-Ray)
Plot Synopsis: “From cutting classes to brawling in the streets, Yusuke Urameshi is not your typical role model. In fact, this kid’s nothing more than a fourteen-year-old delinquent with a talent for trouble. But in a single selfless act Yusuke dies while saving another. For such noble sacrifice he is given a second chance at life, but it’s to be a life far different than the one left behind. Now a Spirit Detective, the young man must track down demons and humans alike who desire to rule over the three realms of reality.”
Yu Yu Hakusho is probably one of the few Shonen Jump series I actually liked enough to finish watching. I’m glad it’s coming out on BD because now it will look better than ever, and now Funimation can fix the errors that some of the fourth season DVDs had. Yu Yu Hakusho also has one of Funimation’s best dubs. Well, the script is one of the best at least. Some of the performances were kind of iffy. But the script was heavily rewritten for the English dub and it actually gave Yusuke an attitude that fits someone who’s supposed to be a teenage street-punk. Funimation has actually gone back to re-record certain parts of the series for this release, which should hopefully fix the iffy performances.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Set 1
Plot Synopsis: “”Never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up.” When Utena was just a child and in the depths of sorrow, she found salvation in those words. They were the words of a prince, who wrapped her in his rose-scented embrace and bestowed upon her both a ring and the promise that it would lead her to him again. She never forgot the encounter. In fact, she was so impressed that she aspired to be like the prince and also help those in need.
Now a spirited teenager, Utena attends the prestigious Ohtori Academy; however, her strong sense of chivalry soon places her at odds with the school’s student council and thrusts her into a series of mysterious and dangerous duels against its members.”
The first time I watched Utena was about a year ago when D2 Brigade/That Guy With The Glasses/ Anime News Network reviewer JesuOtaku was doing a stream featuring bad dubs. The shows were Garzey’s Wing (which is glorious and you should watch it now), Utena, and some other piece of crap I can’t remember. Might have been Angel Links. I really liked Utena, though the dub was really bad, and decided to watch it. About a month or so later RightStuf announced they were going to re-release the series, so I put my watching on hold and waited for these sets. Glad I waited, because this set is great. Comes in a nice chipboard box that feels great when you rub it against your face or whatever body part you feel like, and has a booklet filled with all kinds of words and stuff. I’m just glad it got here before postal workers up here went on strike.

Project Diva
Plot Synopsis: I’m not entirely sure… I can’t read the back of game’s case, so I have no idea what exactly is going on here. From what I can gather from playing the game, some group of villains has kidnapped Miku’s friends and stolen most of her outfits, and now she has to sing and dance to get them back. I’m not sure how the singing and dancing makes the villains give up on their plan and give back the other vocaloids and costumes. Maybe they’re Zentradi? I can’t tell. You never get to see them.
Anyway. I bought this because I played the demo for Project Diva 2nd, and thought it was pretty fun. But Project Diva 2nd is almost $70, whereas this one is only $40. And I use ‘only’ in a relative sense. $40 is an absurd amount of money for a PSP game. But whatever. I bought it and it’s pretty fun, though I can’t understand any of the songs. That’s probably for the best anyway.
The ConBlog: New York Anime Festival 2010
In September 2009, Reed Exhibitions, the company that brings us New York Comic Con (NYCC) and New York Anime Festival (NYAF), announced that in 2010 they would be combining both conventions into one super-huge mega-con. This news was met with mixed reactions. Some were delighted to hear that they would be able to get into both cons with only one admission – two cons for the price of one. Others were fearful that this was basically an excuse to “eliminate” NYAF, and that Reed would end up focusing mostly on the NYCC portion, while NYAF got “shoved into the basement.” Unfortunately, our worst fears came true, and as a result this year’s NYAF was far less enjoyable and far more frustrating.
But before getting into all that, let’s talk about the panels that took place…
Otaku in Review Podcast – Bankruptcy is Bad, Toradora is Good
This week we cover general news and goings on. Scott Pilgrim, also known as “that awesome movie that every geek except me has seen,” is apparently awesome (And I really want to see it). Some awesome (or creepy, depending on how you look at it) news in the field of 2D love as we discuss Love Plus + and its use of augmented reality barcodes (whatever that means). Hatsune Miku is jumping overseas with her first U.S. “concert” that of course is on the opposite side of the country.
Drama’s a-brewing with FUNimation again, with what they did with the second ED sequence to My Bride is a Mermaid. Urban Vision might not be doing so hot, or maybe they’re just restructuring as they say? MangaGamer’s having troubles with Koihime Musou, but you should still buy it. NIS America details their upcoming releases of Toradora!, Persona: Trinity Soul, Pandora Hearts, and some generic foxgirl deity show. And the best news of all, MITSUDOMOE SEASON 2! (Scott was not amused by my enthusiasm).
Not all the news was good though, as two companies in Japan recently filed for bankruptcy. Hear our thoughts on this week’s episode.
