Otaku in Review Podcast – Bankruptcy is Bad, Toradora is Good

...especially when Taiga gets angry.

This week we cover general news and goings on. Scott Pilgrim, also known as “that awesome movie that every geek except me has seen,” is apparently awesome (And I really want to see it). Some awesome (or creepy, depending on how you look at it) news in the field of 2D love as we discuss Love Plus + and its use of augmented reality barcodes (whatever that means). Hatsune Miku is jumping overseas with her first U.S. “concert” that of course is on the opposite side of the country.

Drama’s a-brewing with FUNimation again, with what they did with the second ED sequence to My Bride is a Mermaid. Urban Vision might not be doing so hot, or maybe they’re just restructuring as they say? MangaGamer’s having troubles with Koihime Musou, but you should still buy it. NIS America details their upcoming releases of Toradora!, Persona: Trinity Soul, Pandora Hearts, and some generic foxgirl deity show. And the best news of all, MITSUDOMOE SEASON 2! (Scott was not amused by my enthusiasm).

Not all the news was good though, as two companies in Japan recently filed for bankruptcy. Hear our thoughts on this week’s episode.

Otaku in Review Podcast – I Prefer the Other Seitokai

This week Michael Camacho from The OtakuGamer joined us to talk about what he’s watching from the Summer season, including why he loves Seitokai Yakuindomo so much and why I was not at all impressed with it. We also get into a debate over Mitsudomoe (and why it’s amazing), which turned out to be rather civil, much to Scott’s disappointment.

In the news: some kickass new licenses, an amazing composer you probably have never heard of is coming to Otakon, and the unfortunate passing of Speed Racer voice actor Peter Fernandez. All this and more on this week’s Otaku in Review podcast!

Let's Talk About Mitsudomoe

Oh my, the haters are hating this one. Let’s start with a quote, shall we?

Mitsudomoe’s opening reminds me of everything that is wrong with anime today. Well done. – The Golden Waste

So far it seems that Mitsudomoe is the Seitokai no Ichizon of this season. It’s the one show that I find hysterical, yet everyone else finds it totally unfunny, lame, or even creepy. And there’s the people criticizing it simply because it has “moe” in the title, without even knowing the actual meaning.

You might not find this show funny, and that’s fine and all. The humor’s not for everyone. I’ve run across plenty of shows that people claim are funny and yet had no effect on me whatsoever. Humor is subjective, and this seems to be no exception.

That said, I freaking love this show so far. Every minute in the first 2 episodes was full of non-stop laughs for me. The three girls are just so crazy, abnormal, and random that it completely cracks me up. Yes, the three sisters are character tropes we’ve seen before, but the way in which the jokes are executed are what make this show so good. Right when I’m about to recover from laughing my ass off at one joke, another one pops up in my face. I barely have time to breathe when I watch this show.

Definitely try it out if you haven’t already. The humor is definitely meant for older audiences, but that doesn’t mean this show is “lolicon” or anything creepy like that. The three girls are very good at keeping their clothes on, so unless you’re scrutinizing every detail and deliberately looking for it, you shouldn’t find anything creepy about this show.

Mitsudomoe is available on Crunchyroll
