Funimation April 2012 Releases

Funimation releases for April have finally been announced and are available for pre-order on RightStuf. I recommend the Fullmetal Alchemist movie. It’s pretty good, if you like Fullmetal Alchemist. April also sees three other new releases, including Black Butler season 2, Okami-san, and Legend of the Legendary Heroes. This is a step up over March, which is kind of barren.

Oh! Edo Rocket Part 1 and Part 2

Plot Synopsis (from part 1): “Welcome to Edo, a town where the finer things in life are strictly forbidden. You can’t have fun, you can’t earn money, and you certainly can’t strap a princess to a rocket and blast her into space – but none of that will stop Seikichi. Making things explode is his calling, and if the little man with the big rocket can send his lady to the moon, the city of Edo just might become bearable again.”

I watched the first episode of Oh! Edo Rocket last year and I enjoyed what I saw.  Well TRSI during their twelve days of Christmas sale had both parts of the show on sale and I just could not pass this up.

My Bride is a Mermaid Part 1 and Part 2

Plot Synopsis: “Nagasumi’s in hot water after a beautiful, young mermaid named Sun saves him from drowning. The deep-sea sweetheart’s dad is a merman Yakuza prone to executing anyone who learns his family’s scaly secret! Luckily, there’s a catch – if Nagasumi agrees to marry Sun, he just might avoid sleeping with the fishes!

Of course, the honeymoon ends before it even begins when Nagasumi finds his life flooded with gilled gangsters looking out for their boss’s little girl. The kid’s definitely in over his head, but there’s no denying the mermaid’s allure – Nagasumi’s hooked and Sun’s ready to come ashore!”

I rented the first DVD of this show last year and I liked the first episode enough that I wanted to add the series to my collection.  Like with Oh! Edo Rocket above Right Stuf had the two parts on sale so I figured now would be a great time to purchase the series.

Stuff I Bought This Week – April 15th

Oh! Edo Rocket – Part 2

Plot Synopsis: “Who’s the cat that’s number one at blasting rockets into space? Seikichi! This miniscule maestro of making things go boom won’t stop till he blows it up! The kid’s dynamite with a fuse in his hand, but there’s a mean ol’ magistrate determined to turn Edo into a firework free, no-fun zone. As if that weren’t bad enough, the little man with the big wick is caught in a catfight between two blood-thirsty, shape-shifting, sexy lady space beasts! One’s a homesick princess who wants to go back to the moon, and the other’s a monster who wants to munch on some mortals! Seikichi’s only hope for survival is to trust his friends, follow his heart, and hope to high heaven he picks the right girl for a romantic rocket-fueled ride into outer space!”

I liked the first half of the series, so I obviously decided to get the other half. My favourite moment is easily the beginning of episode 15, where in the original Japanese version they make reference to Japanese actors and TV shows. In the dub they obviously had to rewrite all of those references, and in the end call out the fact that what they’re saying is entirely different than what’s in the subtitles. It’s a pretty funny show, this being helped by the partially rewritten dub.

One Piece Season 3 First Voyage

Plot Synopsis:  “When his crew is nearly crushed by the wreckage of a ship that fell from the sky, Luffy sets his sights on sailing straight into the clouds! First order of business: find a stalwart soul who knows how to get from the deep blue sea to the wild blue yonder. The Straw Hats dock at Mock Town in search of directions, but instead they’re brutally bullied by pirates who’ve forgotten how to dream. Fortunately for adventure’s sake, Robin catches wind of a legendary liar whose monkey minions can equip any ship for a deadly ascent on the Knockup Stream. Hold on to your hats because Luffy and his mates will soon find out if the Going Merry flies as well as she floats.”

I reviewed this already. I like One Piece, so I bought more One Piece.

Stuff I Bought This Week – March 25th

Starting today there’s going to be a new feature on the site. Every week I’ll post what I bought or what arrived in the mail, along with a plot synopsis, and a link to where you can buy it.

Dragon Ball Z Kai – Part 4 (Blu-Ray)

Plot Synopsis: “After learning that Frieza murdered his father and destroyed his home planet, Goku takes aim at the putrid purple monster in the greatest grudge match the galaxy has ever seen! The bruises multiply at a furious rate as the two warriors trade blows in a battle that literally destroys Planet Namek. As the slugfest approaches a standstill, Frieza forever silences Goku’s closest friend – sending Earth’s hero into a Super-Saiyan Rage that threatens to obliterate them both!”

Dragon Ball Z was the series that got me into anime, as it did for many anime fans my age, so Kai was something I was interested in as soon as I had heard about it. I’ll freely admit that DBZ is far too slow paced and has too many episodes for many people to get into. I can’t even watch more than a few episodes before I get tired of it, and I actually like the show. So the idea of cutting the episode count significantly, and just generally speeding the story up, is an idea that I can get behind. It lets me relive my childhood, but in highly condensed form. It’s probably the first time I’ve been excited for anything DBZ related since I was 12.

Oh! Edo Rocket – Part 1 (DVD)

Plot Synopsis: “Welcome to Edo, a town where the finer things in life are strictly forbidden. You can’t have fun, you can’t make money, and you certainly can’t strap a princess to a rocket and blast her into space. The magistrate may have declared it open season on fireworks, but that won’t stop Seikichi. Making things explode is his calling, and nothing can keep him from going higher and brighter than ever before. Besides, with girl-crazy aliens chugging blood all over town, the time is right for taking back liberties. If the little man with the big rocket can play nice with the tanukis long enough to send his lady to the moon, the city of Edo might become bearable again.”

I had heard from a few people that this series was pretty funny, specifically the dub. While it is kind of funny, it’s not nearly as hilarious as people made it out to be. But considering I managed to find it for about $25, it’s good enough.
