Janai’s 2010 Year in Review: Top 5 Best and Worst Anime
In 2010 we found out what a squid invasion would be like. We learned about what’s it’s like to attend high school in the afterlife. We were treated to yet more of those famous pantsless heroines we love so much. And on top of all that, zombies and boobs. Yes, 2010 was an interesting year, and while there were a good number of shows I thoroughly enjoyed, some shows ended up quite terrible. Here are my best and worst of 2010.
Oh yeah, I wrote this post at 2:00 in the morning while on a caffeine high, so I’m sorry if I’m more vicious and sarcastic than usual.
Best of 2010
#5: Angel Beats!
Take some of everyone’s favorite character archetypes, throw in an awesome sci-fi/mystery story with some drama and top-notch animation, and you have Angel Beats! KEY’s original production certainly turned out to be a fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why. If you dismissed this show as “hurr durr generic moe crap” or you just really hate KEY, then you should clear your head of your bias and give this show an honest chance, because it’s one of the more interesting and creative shows to come out recently.
Antz' Fall 2010 Anime Preview
It’s everyone’s favourite time of the year, a new season of anime is upon us. It’s time to discover new series to follow, new series to complain about on Twitter and other forums, and new series to pretend we hate but secretly enjoy. Since the new season is here, I’ve decided to do a small Fall Preview. All of these are based on the first episode, and are obviously not meant as a judgment about the whole series, just how the first episode sets it up.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
Whether or not you should watch Panty and Stocking can be determined quite easily. There’s a giant shit monster in the first episode. Based on your reaction to that sentence, you now know whether or not you want to watch it. I think it’s juvenile and not really that entertaining, but that’s just me.

ANNCast – Viewers Like You V: Battle for the Planet of the Apes

Zac Bertschy of ANN invited Scott Spaziani (from Otaku in Review, the podcast I co-host) and myself to come on ANNCast and talk about the upcoming season. The “season of sequels,” as many people are calling it, is looking pretty promising for me – mostly because I’m a fan of many of the shows getting sequels. Even Zac shows optimism by expressing some interest in the lineup. And for some reason, Scott continues to be amazed by my pronunciation of Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.
We also talk about New York Anime Festival briefly, which Scott & I will both be at next weekend, and are very much looking forward to.
For more of my thoughts on the upcoming season, check out my contribution to Project Haruhi’s Fall Preview.

Otaku in Review Podcast – Fall 2010 Preview
The Fall season is almost upon us. In this episode, Scott & I take a look at the upcoming anime. Two of my favorite ecchi shows are getting second seasons, plus we’re finally seeing some new mecha shows, and a slice-of-life drama that sounds like it could have KEY potential. Hear our thoughts on each of them in this episode.
In the news, we cover recent happenings related to Valkyria Chronicles, K-ON!!, and Atlus. Miyazaki is nominated for another (well-deserved) award, Hayate the Combat Butler gets a live-action series that doesn’t look too promising, and FUNimation rescues the Disgaea anime that nobody likes (but I do).
Oh, and I make fun of Scott’s terrible pronunciation of “shoujo.”
As always, credit goes to Chartfag for the chart and info.
#5: BAKA and TEST- Summon the Beasts (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu)
